Sabah, Borneo

A place of wild sounds, winding rivers, and life at every turn.

After arriving from the Philippines at some absurd hour, the tropical humidity hit me like an old friend. The pool and Tanjung Aru beach felt more like a spa under the sun, but a quick trip to the higher altitude of Kinabalu Park, brought cooler air and a much-needed reset. I even got to reunite with Ben, the gorgeous ridgeback at Jungle Jack’s Backpackers — a stone’s throw from the park and the perfect base for exploring the highest peak between the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea.

Soon after, I ventured to Sepilok, home to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. These sanctuaries offer an informed glimpse into the fragility of these severely endangered species. Nearby, the Kinabatangan River provides a jungle experience like no other, teeming with wildlife and untouched beauty. From misty mountains to vibrant reefs, Borneo is a place that pulls you in and leaves you longing to return.
