Ata Whenua Shadowland

Ata Whenua Shadowland is a two piece collection that reflects on a journey of uncovering the essence of home and establishing a connection with the whenua (land) of Aotearoa (New Zealand). It delves into a realm where darkness and light coexist, revealing hidden secrets in the domain of the unconscious. Join me in navigating the depths where awe and curiosity intertwine with the raw elements of Te Waipounamu – the South Island.

Rāhotu

As I stood on the shores beneath the fjords of Piopiotahi, my first gaze revealed the commanding presence of Rāhotu, Mitre Peak. It unfolded before me like a majestic spectacle, stirring a profound sense of wonder.

Through the creation of a composite photograph, ‘Rāhotu,’ which translates to ‘Longing for the Sun’ in Māori, serves as a visual poem. It captures the ephemeral transition from night to day, as a serene interplay unfolds between the earthly realm and the celestial expanse.

‘Rāhotu’ was captured during my first visit to Piopiotahi, Milford Sound in 2023. It holds deep significance for me as it marked the final stop during my hike down the South Island, and it is also a place where my grandparents worked in their twenties. The scenes from this otherworldly realm give the sensation of journeying back in time, making it challenging to overlook the spiritual connections and stories weaving between the sea, earth, and sky.

Wandering Mist

Cruising towards the mighty Stirling Falls in Piopiotahi, the boat becomes a tiny speck beneath the unending cascade. The water descends gracefully yet powerfully from the towering cliffs of the surrounding fjords, and its thunderous resonance fills the air. As we draw closer, the tangible force of nature emerges—each droplet within the misty veil eloquently narrates the waterfalls enduring power.
